On July 15,1797,young St. Claire Pollock died from a fall off the nearby cliffs onto the rocks below. He was buried where he fell off, for his dad George Pollock had bought the land. George Pollock laid a marble monument over his grave (坟墓). In 1800,he sold the property to a neighbor, with a request:
“There is a small enclosure (圈占地) near your boundary fence -within -which lie the re-mains of a favorite child ^ covered by a marble monument. You will confer a peculiar and interesting favor upon me by allowing me to convey the enclosure to you so that you will consider it a part of your own estate, keeping it, however, always enclosed and sacred.”
Over time, the place became known as Claremont Hill, site of the Battle of Harlem Heights during the Revolutionary War, and later, the very popular Claremont Hotel, which eventually became a restaurant. Sadly, the building burned down in 1950 and was replaced by the Claremont Playground Unbelievably, over the years, little St. Claire’s grave was always respected In fact, at one point, the city attempted to move the remains for the construction of Grant’s tomb, the former president, only to be met with a wave of opposition from citizens, The monument has been replaced twice due to deterioration, the most recent having been done in 1967.
St. Claire’s grave is one of only three private graves on public land on the entire island of Manhattan. The first is Grants tomb. The second belongs to military General William Jenkins Worth. Children who are raised in households with dogs or farm animals during their first year of life may have a lower risk of asthma (哮喘)a few years later,a new study suggests.
In the study, the researchers looked at early exposure to dogs and farm animals and the rate of asthma among about 377,000 preschool-age and 276,000 school-age children in Sweden, Among the school-age kids in the study, those who had been exposed to dogs during their first year of life were 13 percent less likely to have asthma at age 6, compared with the school-age kids who hadn’t.
The researchers said they were at a loss to know what correctly may explain the link be-tween early exposure to animals and a reduced risk of asthma. “It might be due to a single factor, or more likely, a combination of several factors related to a dog ownership lifestyle or dog-owners’ attitudes, such as kids’ exposure to household dirt and pet dust, time spent out-doors or being physically active,” the study author Fall told Live Science.
“My take-home message from this study is that parents at this point do not need to worry about keeping their dog when expecting a baby for fear of asthmatic disease,” Fall said “I do want to be clear that this recommendation is valid only for families without a child already having allergies. If they already have a furred-animal-allergic child,we do not recommend them to get a furred pet.”
“Being exposed to bacteria early in life is vital for shaping a healthy immune system, and may play a role in modifying a person’s risk of developing asthma and allergies. With allergies and asthma, it is partially genetic, but studies like this do show us that the place where you live does play a key role in the development of your immune system, and the development of allergies and asthma,” Parikh told Live Science.
28. According to the text, the school-age kids exposed to farm animals at one year old will        .
A. not have asthma       B. grow up stronger
C. have more chance to stay with dogs    D. have less possibility of suffering from asthma
29. Which of the following will Fall probably support?
A. Asthma is still a serious disease for most children.
B. Dirt and dust in the family are bad for children’s health.
C. The reasons for the lower risk of asthma aren’t exact.
D. Most parents can’t always keep their house very clean.
30. Who shouldn’t have a pet?
A. Children that don’t have asthma.   B. Children that are allergic to animals.
C. Children that have some allergic animals.  D. Children that don’t like outdoors activities.
